The Experience

“You guys ever seen a flying fish?” our captain grinned as we left Ko Olina Marina — honestly, I hadn’t. The salt air hit different out here, kind of sharp but clean, and the boat felt almost too nice for my sandy flip-flops. There were just six of us sprawled across bean bags and soft deck cushions, everyone a little shy at first. But once someone cracked open a cold beer from the bar (I stuck to pineapple juice), it started to feel like we’d known each other longer than twenty minutes.

The coast of West Oahu slid by — green hills, then flashes of white sand. Our guide, Kaleo, pointed out spinner dolphins off the port side. I squinted and saw fins slicing through sunlight. He told us about humpbacks in winter; apparently they come close enough that you can sometimes hear them sing through the hull if you’re quiet. We didn’t get whales today but did spot turtles bobbing near the surface. The water looked unreal — all those blues layered together — and when we anchored at the snorkel spot, I hesitated for a second before jumping in. Mask on, face down: it’s another world under there. Parrotfish darted past my hands and I swear one of the sea turtles gave me side-eye.

Back on board, towels everywhere (bring your own — mine smelled faintly like sunscreen forever after), we dug into lunch: wraps stuffed with turkey or chicken pesto, fruit that tasted like sunshine, chips made from taro root — way better than expected. Someone spilled sparkling wine and nobody cared; Kaleo just laughed and handed out more napkins. The sun was warm but not brutal, just enough to make you want to stretch out and do nothing for a while. Sailing back toward Ko Olina was quieter — maybe everyone was thinking about what they’d seen underwater or maybe just sleepy from swimming.

I keep thinking about that little moment floating above coral, hearing only my breath in the snorkel and distant laughter from the boat. It’s not every day you get to see Oahu this way — slow and salty and kind of perfect in its own messy way.
