The Experience
We met our guide right under the George M. Cohan statue—he was already humming something I couldn’t place, which felt about right for a Broadway tour. The city was loud (as usual), but he somehow made it feel like we’d slipped backstage. He started with a story about his first audition—something about nerves and shoes that squeaked at the worst possible moment. It made me laugh, and honestly, I relaxed after that. There’s something different about hearing these tales from someone who’s actually lived them.
Walking down Broadway, we stopped outside theaters I’d only ever seen in Playbill photos. Our guide pointed out where Ethel Barrymore once performed—he even did this little impression of her voice (not bad). The smell of roasted nuts from a street cart drifted by while he talked about opening nights and flops, and how sometimes you can still hear old show tunes echoing through the alleyways if you listen hard enough. Maybe he was joking, but for a second I tried to hear them too.
Times Square hit me harder than I expected—so much light it almost buzzed on your skin. Our guide told us how actors used to sneak out between scenes just to feel the crowd energy. There were tourists everywhere, some kids doing TikToks in front of the red steps, but our little group felt tucked into our own story. At one point I asked about ghosts (couldn’t help myself) and he grinned: “Oh yeah, every theater has at least one.” He swore he saw a shadow backstage once during tech rehearsal—who knows? I still think about that.
