The experience

The tour starts on foot through the oldest state park in the United States, where you walk past three distinct waterfalls without arranging transport or entry separately. Your guide is a licensed local who knows the region's history: the daredevils who went over the edge, the rescues that happened in the gorge, and how the falls have changed over the past century and a half. The route takes you to Luna Island first, where you stand close enough to Bridal Veil Falls, the smallest of the three, to feel the mist and hear the roar.

From there you move to viewpoints of the American Falls, where a massive mound of rock sits at the base: the result of countless stone falls that have reshaped the ledge over time. The guide walks you through what you're seeing: the geology, the stories, the scale of the thing. Then you reach the Horseshoe Falls, which curves between New York and Canada and is the largest and most powerful of the three. The Niagara Falls Observation Tower, standing 282 feet above the gorge, gives you a vantage point where all three falls fit into one view.

The boat ride comes at the end. You board the Maid of the Mist (the oldest and most famous vessel on the falls), and it takes you down into the gorge and straight into the base of the Horseshoe Falls. The spray is heavy enough that you'll want the rain gear they provide. The boat holds its position in the churning water long enough for you to take in the full force of it, then turns back. The whole outing, from the first viewpoint to the boat dock, takes about two hours.
