The experience

The Maid of the Mist boat ride is the oldest attraction at Niagara Falls and the centerpiece of this tour. The boat takes you up close to the base of Horseshoe Falls, where the sheer volume of water and the mist create an immediate sense of the falls' raw power. The boat operates May through November. During the off-season, the tour substitutes the NYPA Power Vista. From the boat, you then head to the Prospect Point Observation Tower, which rises 282 feet above the Niagara Gorge and frames all three falls (Horseshoe, American, and Bridal Veil) in a single panoramic view.

Cave of the Winds is where the tour descends into the gorge itself. An elevator takes you down to the floor, and from there you walk onto the Hurricane Deck, a platform positioned just feet from the roaring Bridal Veil Falls. This is the closest ground-level access to the water. The tour also includes viewing points at Stedman's Bluff and Porter's Bluff, both located between the American and Horseshoe Falls, and Luna Island, which sits between the American and Bridal Veil Falls.

The evening illumination is the tour's finale. Starting at dusk, 12,600 LED lights (a $3 million upgrade) illuminate the falls in changing colors. You see this display from several vantage points: Terrapin Point offers a direct view of Horseshoe Falls lit against the night sky, while Luna Island and the bluffs provide different angles on the American and Bridal Veil Falls. From June through August, fireworks accompany the illumination. The tour is led by a live English-speaking guide and is suitable for all fitness levels. All areas are wheelchair accessible, and infants can ride in a stroller.
