The Experience
“You ever tried to pronounce Tchoupitoulas?” That’s how our guide, Renee, started — and I still can’t say it right. We were barely out of the French Quarter when she pointed out a mural I’d never noticed before (and I’ve been here twice). The colors looked almost wet from last night’s rain, and there was this faint smell of powdered sugar drifting in from somewhere — or maybe that was just me hoping for beignets already. Renee waved at someone on the corner and they actually waved back. It felt like she knew half the city.
We rolled through Treme and Marigny with music leaking out of open windows — brass, then some old R&B. Renee told us about musicians who grew up on these streets, but not like a script; she’d pause to point out a house or laugh about something her uncle did during Mardi Gras. By the time we hit City Park, I was ready to stretch my legs. The oaks are so big they almost swallow the sky. Cafe du Monde was packed but worth it; the beignets left a trail of sugar down my shirt (I gave up trying to stay clean after the first bite).
The Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery was quieter than I expected — cool air, Spanish moss everywhere, marble tombs with names I recognized from jazz records. We drove through Audubon Park and past Tulane’s campus; students sprawled on the grass like they had nowhere else to be. The Garden District came last — those houses look straight out of a movie, but it’s the porches that got me. People actually sit outside here, talking or just watching the street go by. The whole tour felt more like hanging out with a local friend than anything official. I still think about that porch light glow as we headed back.
