The experience

First thing that happened was our captain, Mr. Dwayne, with his faded LSU cap: waved at some fisherman passing by (not on our side, he said, “we don’t do fishing here, just gators and stories”). I liked that. He told us right away this was private land, so no other boats would be around to scare off the animals. It felt quieter than I expected: a kind of hush broken only by birds flapping overhead and the boat’s slow chug.
