Clip in and move across a cliff face on iron rungs and cables.

Mount Blue Sky Via Ferrata is a guided assisted rock climbing activity in Idaho Springs where you clip into safety cables and traverse a cliffside using iron rungs, bridges and ladders. Over 3 hours, you move along a designated path that includes a 50-foot free fall section and a few ziplines, staying connected to the cable system at all times through an advanced locking carabiner setup. A live English-speaking guide leads the way.

The experience

Via Ferrata, the "iron way", uses cables, rungs, rails and bridges to let you climb terrain that would otherwise be inaccessible. Here in Idaho Springs, you'll clip into a cable that runs along the cliff face and move across a series of iron rungs and bridges at your own pace. Each carabiner has an internal locking system that prevents you from disconnecting from both cables at once, so you're always anchored to the course. The setup means you can focus on the movement itself rather than the safety mechanics.

The 3-hour route includes a 50-foot free fall section where the cable drops away beneath you, plus a few ziplines built into the cliffside. You'll need moderate physical fitness and a weight between 40 and 250 pounds. The guide provides the harness, helmet and all climbing equipment. You bring appropriate clothing for the weather, since the course operates rain or shine (lightning is the only exception).

This is a shared guided activity, so you'll move through the course with other climbers. The pace is yours to set within the group structure, and the guide stays with you throughout. Minimum age is 12.

Top questions

What does the 50-foot free fall section actually feel like?

The free fall is a controlled drop where the cable extends downward and you rappel down the cliff face. You're still clipped in the whole time. The sensation is the drop itself, not a loss of connection.

Do I need rock climbing experience to do this?

No prior climbing experience is required. Via Ferrata is designed to make cliff traversal accessible. The iron rungs and cables do the work. You need moderate fitness and comfort with heights, but not technical climbing skill.

What happens if weather turns bad during the activity?

The course operates in rain and most weather conditions. You should dress for whatever the day brings. Lightning is the only condition that stops the activity, so check the forecast and wear layers or rain gear as needed.

Are the ziplines part of the main via ferrata route, or separate?

The ziplines are built into the cliffside course and are included as part of your 3-hour experience. They're woven into the overall route, not an add-on.

What's included in the equipment provided?

The guide provides your harness, helmet and all climbing gear needed for the via ferrata. You don't need to bring or rent any equipment beyond appropriate clothing for the weather.
