The Experience

The red walls rise up fast. You're not expecting how close they get, or how the light changes color as you move through the canyon — one minute rust, the next almost purple where the shadow falls. The Fisher Towers section of the Colorado River is heavy on scenery, the kind of landscape that's been a film set for decades. John Wayne and John Ford shot westerns here; The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp was filmed in this same stretch in 2013. You're floating through movie history without the crew.

The guide handles all the rowing on this half-day trip, so you're sitting back watching the canyon walls and the water. Class 1 and 2 rapids come depending on the season and water level — sometimes there's a chance for a class 3 if the flow is high, but mostly it's small rapids mixed with calm sections. The raft is stable, the pace is steady, and the whole thing takes a morning. You don't need any experience; the guide sets the rhythm. If you want to paddle instead, you can request a paddleboat with advance notice, but the default is you ride and the guide rows.

You'll be on the water for a few hours, so bring water bottles and wear something you don't mind getting splashed. The professional guide covers the route, points out the geology and the filming history, and handles everything on the water. Kids under 50 pounds can't participate due to PFD regulations, and pregnant travelers aren't recommended for this trip.
