The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the smell—sort of earthy and sharp, like grass after rain mixed with engine oil. We were somewhere outside Miami, helmets on, engines rumbling under us, and our guide (I think his name was Carlos?) grinned as he handed over the last set of goggles. My friend tried yelling something over the engine noise—I have no idea what she said, but we both laughed anyway. At one point we stopped by a clearing where you could see downtown Miami way off in the haze.
