Step-by-step itinerary

Doors-off helicopter tour sights

  • Fly over Molokai North shore
  • View tallest sea cliffs and waterfalls
  • Fly over West Maui mountains North shore
  • See rainforest, coastline, and beaches

The Experience

Forty-five minutes in the air with the cabin doors removed changes how you see the island. The helicopter carries six passengers and one pilot, and the flight path takes you first over the North Shore of Molokai to the tallest sea cliffs in the world—sheer walls of rock rising straight from the ocean—then across to West Maui's rainforest, waterfalls and coastline. The pilot narrates throughout and adjusts the route based on weather and conditions that day.

You bring only your cell phone, which stays tethered around your neck on a lanyard the operator provides. No other cameras, no bags, no loose items—goggles are required and go over your regular glasses if you wear them. Long hair gets tied into a bun or braid, and you wear closed-toed shoes that strap to your ankles. The windbreaker jacket keeps you warm at altitude. Weight matters: anyone over 250 pounds must purchase an extra seat at booking, and combined weight limits apply to groups. Children must be at least 10 years old, with an adult accompanying anyone under 18; only passengers 16 and older can sit on the edge seats where the doors are open.

Book at least 48 hours ahead—cancellations within that window get no refund. You'll need to provide your name and weight at the time of booking, and parking at the heliport is pay-per-use by credit card only. The operator holds car keys in the office while you fly.

Top questions

What are the sea cliffs on Molokai's North Shore like from the air?

Molokai's North Shore holds the tallest sea cliffs in the world, and the flight passes directly over them so you see the sheer rock faces rising from the ocean, along with the rainforest and waterfalls that cover the slopes behind them.

Can I bring a camera other than my phone?

No—only your cell phone is allowed on board, and it must stay on a lanyard around your neck at all times during the flight, with one hand keeping hold of it. Air Maui is not responsible if your phone is lost.

What's the age requirement for this doors-off tour?

Children must be at least 10 years old to fly doors-off. An adult must accompany anyone between 10 and 18 years old, and only passengers 16 and older can sit on the edge seats where the doors are open.

Do I need to pay extra if I weigh over a certain amount?

Yes—anyone weighing 230 pounds or more as a single passenger, or 250 pounds or more regardless of group size, must purchase an additional comfort seat at the time of booking for safety and weight distribution on the helicopter.

How far in advance do I need to cancel to get a refund?

Cancellations must be made at least 48 hours before your flight time to receive a refund or reschedule. Groups of 12 or more require seven days' notice.

What should I wear and bring on the flight?

Wear closed-toed shoes that strap to your ankles—no flip-flops or slides. Tie long hair into a bun or braid, and leave hats, bags, sunglasses and all loose items behind. The operator provides goggles (which go over prescription glasses if you wear them) and a windbreaker jacket; nothing is allowed in your pockets.
