The Experience

We waded out from Ka'anapali Beach, the sand already warm underfoot even though it was just after lunch. There’s this funny moment when you’re climbing onto the boat — three steps, but you do get splashed, so don’t wear your favorite shorts. Our guide, Malia, handed out masks and cracked a joke about how everyone looks like a bug in snorkel gear. She’s lived here her whole life and somehow knows every patch of reef by heart.

The ride out was quick — maybe fifteen minutes? I lost track because I kept watching the coastline slide by, all those palm trees and hotels getting smaller. The salt air mixed with sunscreen and someone’s pineapple snack (not mine, I’m still not sure if pineapple before swimming is wise). Malia gave us a quick lesson on the gear for anyone who needed it; I pretended to listen but honestly, I always forget which way the fins go until they’re on my feet.

Once we dropped anchor at this spot she called Turtle Alley (not sure if that’s official), we slid into the water together. It’s quieter under there than I expected — just my own breathing and these flashes of yellow fish darting around. At one point a green sea turtle glided right past my elbow, close enough that I could see little bits of algae on its shell. Malia pointed out some coral that looked almost purple in the afternoon light. The water felt cool but not cold, kind of perfect after sitting in the sun on deck.

Back on board, everyone compared what they’d seen — someone swore they spotted an eel but nobody else believed them. There were sodas and snacks waiting (I grabbed a ginger ale), and we sat under the shaded awning while Malia told stories about growing up here. It didn’t feel rushed at all; more like hanging out with friends who know their way around Maui’s reefs better than anyone else. I still think about that turtle sometimes — how slow and calm it moved compared to us flapping around above.
