The experience

The lesson starts before you get in the water. Once you book, you'll receive a link to fill out a medical waiver: do this right away, since any conditions flagged may need doctor's clearance before you can dive. The day before your scheduled time, you'll complete a short online lesson on scuba basics called Discover Scuba Diver eLearning. That same message will tell you exactly where to meet the guide at the beach. The operator chooses the site based on ocean conditions, so the location can shift day to day.

At the beach, the guide handles the equipment fitting. You'll need to provide your height, weight and US men's shoe size when you book so everything is ready. After an orientation on the sand, you'll suit up and enter the water as part of a group of no more than four people. This small size means the guide can give you real attention while you practice the fundamentals at your own pace. The reef you'll dive on holds coral, fish and sometimes turtles. No prior scuba experience is needed, only basic swimming skills and comfort in the ocean.

The whole experience runs about two and a half hours. One hard constraint: you cannot fly (by plane or helicopter) within 18 hours after diving, so if you're heading to Haleakala or catching a flight later that day, this lesson won't fit your schedule.
