The Experience

I didn’t expect to be standing barefoot in the sand at 7am, mask in hand, squinting at a group text from our Maui dive guide. The old shop in Lahaina was gone after the wildfire, so we met right on the beach—kind of makes sense for a shore dive, you know? There was this salty breeze and everyone sort of shuffled around, checking fins and laughing about shoe sizes (I forgot mine—turns out they had an extra pair that fit well enough). Our guide, Kaleo, had this calm way about him and kept calling the turtles “honu,” which I liked. He told us the reef here changes every week depending on swell and wind, so you never really know what you’ll see.

We waded in slow, letting the water creep up our wetsuits. I remember how quiet it got once we dropped under—just my breath and these distant clicks from somewhere deeper. The coral wasn’t as bright as postcards but there were flashes: a blue nudibranch sliding along a rock, a couple of eels poking out like nosy neighbors. Then suddenly—two green sea turtles gliding right past us. They looked ancient and totally unbothered by us clumsy divers. Kaleo pointed out an octopus tucked into coral; I almost missed it until its skin rippled from brown to pale sand color. After surfacing, he shared some stories about how octopus are called “he’e” here and why they’re so clever—he actually sounded proud, which made me see them differently.

Back on shore I could still taste salt on my lips and honestly felt kind of tired in that good way. We rinsed off gear while talking about where everyone was from (one guy had just flown in from Portland—lucky he wasn’t flying back today since you can’t fly after diving). The whole thing felt loose and friendly, not rushed at all. I keep thinking about those turtles drifting past—how slow time felt underwater compared to everything else lately.

What’s included

Your day includes all necessary scuba equipment—tank, weights, mask and fins—with guidance from a professional instructor who shares local marine knowledge before or after your dive. Water is provided onsite; just bring your certification card and let them know your shoe size ahead of time so they can fit your fins properly before heading into Maui’s reefs together.
