The dive lasts about 2 hours and includes all scuba equipment, weights and fins. You'll need current dive certification and must wait 18 hours after diving before any flight or helicopter ride. The guide will contact you the day before with the beach meeting location, since the original shop was destroyed in the Lahaina wildfire.

The experience

You'll meet your guide at a beach near Lahaina. They'll message you the day before with the exact spot, so call if you don't hear from them. The dive site shifts based on ocean conditions that day, which is how the guide keeps you in the best water for seeing what lives there. Bring your dive certification card and a phone number they can reach you on. You'll also need to submit an online waiver before the dive.

The shallow reef holds green sea turtles, octopus, living coral, colorful nudibranchs and tropical reef fish. Your guide is trained in local marine ecology and will point out what you're seeing and explain the animals' behavior as you move through the ecosystem. All scuba equipment comes with you (tank, weight belt, mask and fins), so you only bring yourself and your certification. The dive runs about 2 hours in the water.

One hard rule: you cannot fly, take a helicopter or drive up to Haleakala for 18 hours after diving. Your body needs that time to off-gas safely. If you want two dives instead of one, you can request that on the day of booking. The guide speaks English, Portuguese, Italian, French and several other languages, so language won't be a barrier.
