The Experience

I’ll be honest, my hands were already sweaty before we even clipped in for the first zipline on Haleakala. I thought I’d be cool about heights, but standing there on the wooden platform, peering out over those green slopes — yeah, not so much. Our guide, Keahi (he told us it means “fire”), grinned and said something about “embracing the butterflies.” I laughed like I got it, but honestly, my legs felt like jelly. The first line zipped by faster than I expected; suddenly I was flying right above these crazy-deep canyons. My stomach did that little flip — you know the one? — but then it was just pure rush. Keahi shouted encouragement from the other end (“You made it!”), and I swear that helped more than I thought it would. Between lines we hiked a bit, crossing these wobbly plank bridges high above the forest floor. The wood felt rough under my palms and there was this moment where a chameleon darted across our path — someone behind me gasped and we all just stopped for a second to watch its tiny feet move.

By the third or fourth zipline, I actually started looking around instead of just holding on for dear life. The views are wild — hills rolling out forever, clouds drifting low enough you feel like you could touch them if you jumped high enough (not that I tried). At one point we floated right over a pool glinting in the sun; Keahi said in winter it fills up after big rains. The group got quieter as we went along — maybe everyone was just soaking it in or catching their breath. Or maybe that’s what happens when you’re hanging from a wire above Maui and realizing how small you are for a minute.
