The Experience

By the time I finally figured out how to adjust my helmet (not as obvious as you’d think), our guide Alex was already handing out these wild-looking Husqvarna e-bikes. The sun was just starting to warm up the hills, and someone nearby was peeling an orange — that sharp citrus smell stuck with me for a weirdly long time. We were a mixed bunch, honestly, but nobody seemed worried about experience levels. Alex grinned and said, “The trail does most of the work for you.” I wasn’t sure if that was comforting or not.

The first stretch of Backbone Trail is this wide, dusty fire road — smooth enough that even the nervous folks in our group relaxed after a few minutes.
