The Experience

You walk up to the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park and the building stops you. It's a replica of the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris, built in the early 1900s as a gift to the city, and it sits on the headlands with the Golden Gate Bridge visible across the water. Your admission ticket gets you inside to see over 124,000 works—European paintings and sculptures, ancient Mediterranean art, and the largest collection of works on paper in the American West. One of the 28 original casts of Rodin's The Thinker is here, and the Salon Doré of the Hôtel de la Trémoille, a French neoclassical interior that's one of the finest examples in the world, is worth the visit alone.

The same ticket also covers the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park on the same day, so you're not choosing between them—you get both. That means you can spend the morning in one, grab lunch, and move to the other without paying twice or planning separate trips. The Legion of Honor's location is the real draw though; after you've walked the galleries, you can step outside and photograph the bridge and Marin Headlands. The museum allows still photography in the permanent galleries (no flash, no tripods), so bring a camera if you want to capture that view.

If you want more depth, you can upgrade to an audio tour at the Legion of Honor, or add access to the Special Exhibits if there's something running during your visit.
