The experience
I’ll be honest, I bought the San Francisco CityPASS® mostly because I hate making decisions on vacation. The idea of having four big attractions sorted, plus a proper boat ride, just sounded like less stress. First stop for me was the California Academy of Sciences. It smelled faintly like wet stone inside (maybe from the aquarium tanks?) and there were kids everywhere, but in that happy, running-around way. Our guide at the planetarium joked about fog being “San Francisco’s favorite weather,” which made everyone laugh since we’d all just come in from a chilly morning.
The Blue & Gold Fleet’s Bay Cruise was next, and honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so giddy seeing Alcatraz up close. The wind whipped my hair into knots and someone behind me kept pointing out sea lions lounging on buoys: felt very local somehow. With the CityPASS®, it was just scan-and-go at each spot, no digging for tickets or anything. I picked Aquarium of the Bay for my third choice (the jellyfish room is weirdly calming), then spent an afternoon at SFMOMA where I lost track of time staring at a giant Rothko. There’s something about wandering through those galleries when your feet are tired from hills outside… you know?
One thing: nine days is more time than you think for a day trip or even if you’re staying longer in San Francisco. I met a couple from Oakland who were using their CityPASS® to do one attraction every other day after work: never thought of that before. And if you’re traveling with kids or friends who all want different things? This pass keeps everyone happy without arguments (well, fewer arguments). Sometimes I still remember how salty the air tasted on that boat ride.
