The experience
Halibut are ambush predators that ignore dead bait, so the first skill you learn is catching your own live bait right from the pier. Using a Sabiki Rig, you'll catch Shiner Perch, Smelt, or Anchovies: the live bait that actually triggers a halibut strike. This isn't a shortcut. It's the foundation. Once you understand the food chain, you move to the rig itself.
The Carolina Rig you'll build has to survive halibut teeth and gill plates that slice weak lines. Salty brings his background in Non-Destructive Inspection to teach you to check leaders for microscopic abrasions that lose trophies. You'll learn to tie tackle that holds when it counts, then master the "Dragging Retrieve". The technique that lets you feel the transition from mud to sand to rock beneath the pier. This is how you map the ocean floor and find the ambush holes where halibut wait.
The hardest part comes last: reading the bite. A halibut's strike is subtle: a tap-tap that feels nothing like a snag. You'll learn the discipline of "feeding the fish" before setting the hook, the patience required to land what other anglers miss. All gear and bait are ready when you arrive. No license is required.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years). Under 12: they can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Sabiki Rig and why do I need to learn it?
The Sabiki Rig is a multi-hook setup that catches live bait (Shiner Perch, Smelt, or Anchovies) right from the pier. Halibut ignore dead bait, so catching your own live bait is the first skill you master because it's what actually triggers a halibut to strike.
How does learning to read the ocean floor help me catch halibut?
The Dragging Retrieve teaches you to feel the bottom topography through your line, so you can distinguish mud from sand from rock and identify the ambush holes where halibut hide. This skill lets you target the exact spots where halibut wait instead of fishing blind.
What makes the Carolina Rig different from other rigs?
The Carolina Rig is built to withstand halibut teeth and gill plates that slice weak lines. You'll learn to check leaders for microscopic abrasions and tie tackle that holds under pressure, ensuring your gear doesn't fail when you hook a trophy fish.
How do I know when a halibut is biting versus when I've snagged the bottom?
A halibut's bite is a subtle tap-tap that feels different from a snag. You'll learn the discipline of "feeding the fish" (letting the halibut take line before setting the hook), which is the hardest skill in fishing and what separates a landed fish from a lost one.
Do I need a fishing license to do this?
No license is required for this class. All gear, bait and tackle are included and ready when you arrive.
