The Experience

I slid into the little yellow GoCar outside the rental place just off the Las Vegas Strip—honestly, it felt like I was about to drive a toy through a video game. The GPS voice chirped to life as soon as I tapped the gas (not sure why I expected silence), and suddenly we were weaving past Mandalay Bay’s gold glass, with Allegiant Stadium hulking on one side. There was this weird mix of engine hum and distant slot machine sounds drifting out from open casino doors. Our guide wasn’t a person but that chatty GPS—she kept tossing out facts about each spot, like how Betty Willis designed the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. We pulled over for photos, naturally. Everyone else was doing it too—some folks in Elvis costumes, which cracked me up.

Driving up the Las Vegas Strip in that tiny car felt both exposed and kind of liberating. Caesars Palace looked even more dramatic from so close to the ground; you can see every fake Roman column and statue up close. At one light, a local rolled down his window and asked if we were lost or just having fun (“Both?” I yelled back). The Bellagio fountains started their show right as we passed—the spray actually drifted over us for a second, cool against the heat. That’s not something you get in a regular car. We looped around to see the Sphere—honestly, it looks even stranger in daylight—and zipped by Resorts World with its massive LED screens flashing so many colors my eyes felt tired.

The tour let us go at our own pace, so we took a random detour into the Arts District after hearing about it from another couple at a red light (they waved us in—Vegas people are friendlier than you’d think). There was this faint smell of coffee mixed with paint thinner near some murals behind Art Square; I still think about that weird combo when I remember the day. The GPS kept up with us even off script—she told us where to turn for Gold & Silver Pawn Shop (“Pawn Stars” fans might geek out here). If you want extra adventure, you can add Red Rock Canyon—it’s about 30 minutes out and totally different energy: red rocks, quiet air, no neon anywhere.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much just driving around—a lot of it was because people kept pointing at our GoCar or giving us thumbs-up. Even got honked at by someone dressed as Spider-Man (only in Vegas). By the end I had sun on my face and dust on my shoes and way too many blurry photos of neon signs. But yeah… if you want to see Las Vegas landmarks with zero pressure and plenty of oddball moments, this is it.
