The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and drops you at Camp Tahoe, a private beach setup on Sand Harbor's white sand. Everything is already there: umbrellas, chairs, tables, towels, floaties for kids, and a cooler stocked with ice, cups, soft drinks, juices and sparkling water. You walk straight to the water and do what you came for—kayak or stand-up paddle among the boulders, swim in the lake, or sit on the sand and do nothing at all. Bonsai Rock, one of Lake Tahoe's most photographed spots, sits close by and your guide can take you there as part of the day.

Your guide teaches you about Lake Tahoe as you move through the park, and by the time you leave you'll know more than most locals. Snacks arrive throughout the session: granola bars, chips, fresh fruit, packaged cheeses, yogurt and candy. The guide handles all the work—you show up, swim, eat, rest—and at the end of your session the vehicle picks you up and takes you back to your hotel. Kayak and stand-up paddle rentals are available next door if you want to upgrade; the Kokanee Restaurant and Bar sits nearby if you want a full meal or a cocktail after.

You choose between the morning slot (9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.) or the afternoon (2 to 5:30 p.m.), both 3.5 hours long. No parking hassle, no entry lines, no gear to pack or carry—the only thing you need to bring is yourself and a willingness to get wet.

Is this one for you?Groups of up to 21 people work well here because the beach setup stays relaxed and the guide keeps everyone together without feeling crowded. Pick the morning session if you want the day to end by early afternoon, or the afternoon slot if you'd rather sleep in and spend your evening on the water.

Top questions

What can I actually do in the water at Sand Harbor?

You can kayak or stand-up paddle among the boulders, swim freely in Lake Tahoe, or float on a floatie if you prefer. Your guide can also paddle you close to Bonsai Rock, which is just offshore from the beach setup.

Do I need to bring my own kayak or paddleboard?

No—kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available to rent next door at the same location. You don't need to bring any water gear or beach equipment; chairs, umbrellas, towels and floaties are all set up and waiting.

What's included in the snacks and drinks?

The tour includes granola bars, chips, fresh fruit, packaged cheeses, yogurt and candy throughout the session, plus a cooler with ice, cups, soft drinks, juices and sparkling water. Alcohol is not provided, but the Kokanee Restaurant and Bar is nearby if you want a full meal or cocktail.

How does the transportation work?

Round-trip transport from your hotel is included in the price. An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up before your session and drops you back at your hotel when it ends, so you don't need to arrange parking or drive yourself.

Can I bring young children or infants?

Yes—children are welcome from age 1 onward. Infants can ride in a pram or stroller, and they must sit on an adult's lap during the vehicle ride. Floaties and kids' toys are provided on the beach.

What if I just want to relax instead of being active in the water?

You can do exactly that. The beach setup includes comfortable chairs and umbrellas, and you're welcome to rest, read or watch the lake for the entire 3.5 hours while your guide and other guests enjoy the water.
