Step-by-step itinerary

Helicopter tour around Lake Tahoe

  • Depart from Lake Tahoe Airport
  • Fly to south shore of Lake Tahoe
  • Fly along shoreline to Emerald Bay
  • View Emerald Bay and alpine lake
  • Continue circling entire Lake Tahoe shoreline
  • Return to Lake Tahoe Airport

The Experience

The helicopter departs Lake Tahoe Airport and heads south along the shoreline toward Emerald Bay, where the water deepens into shades of green and blue. From there, the tour traces the entire perimeter of the lake before returning to the airport. Most of Lake Tahoe's shoreline is visible from the roads that circle it, but the altitude and angle from the helicopter reveal the geography in a way ground-level views cannot match — the scale of the basin, the shape of the bays, the forest coverage and the granite peaks all read differently from above.

A live guide provides commentary throughout the flight, and noise-reducing headsets let you hear it clearly over the aircraft. The 45-minute flight is long enough to cover the full shoreline without rushing, and short enough to fit into a morning or afternoon without consuming the whole day.

Is this one for you? You're watching from the air rather than flying the helicopter yourself, so no pilot experience is needed — the guide handles the route and narration while you focus on the views. This suits anyone who wants to see the full scale and shape of Lake Tahoe without spending hours driving the loop roads, or who wants to photograph the shoreline from angles the ground cannot reach.

Top questions

What is Emerald Bay and why does the tour stop there?

Emerald Bay is a distinctive cove on Lake Tahoe's west shore, known for its deep blue-green water and rocky formations. The helicopter passes directly over it early in the tour, giving you a close aerial view of the bay's shape and color before continuing around the rest of the lake.

How much of Lake Tahoe do I actually see on this flight?

The tour follows the entire 72-mile shoreline of Lake Tahoe, so you see the full perimeter of the lake from the air. The flight covers the south shore, the west side where Emerald Bay sits, the north shore, and the east side before returning to the airport.

Will I be able to hear the guide over the helicopter noise?

Yes. Noise-reducing headsets are included, and the live guide provides commentary through them so you can hear clearly during the flight without shouting or missing details.

What are the weight restrictions for this flight?

Each passenger must weigh no more than 250 pounds. The combined weight of all passengers on a single flight cannot exceed 500 pounds. Weights must be provided accurately at booking, and passengers may be weighed again at the airport before departure.

Can I bring my infant or young child on the helicopter?

Infants must sit on an adult's lap during the flight. Children of any age can fly as long as they are accompanied by an adult and the combined weight limits are met.

Is this tour wheelchair accessible?

The airport and all ground areas are wheelchair accessible. If you need wheelchair assistance, call the tour operator before your flight to arrange it. A full refund will be provided if your specific accessibility needs cannot be accommodated.
