The experience

What makes Via Ferrata different from rock climbing is the permanent infrastructure built into the rock itself. Steel cables run the entire length of each route, anchored directly into the cliff face. You wear a harness with a specialized lanyard that clips to this cable, keeping you connected 100% of the time as you move upward. Ladder rungs, steel steps and suspension bridges replace the scrambling and exposed terrain that would otherwise make the route impassable. The result is a way to ascend an 800-foot vertical face without the years of training rock climbing demands.

Your guide leads you through the previously inaccessible terrain of Tram Face, high above the Olympic Valley floor. Transportation from Olympic Valley brings you to the start, and all technical gear (helmet, harness, lanyard) is provided. The activity works for ages 10 and up, and no prior climbing experience is necessary. What matters is a moderate level of physical fitness and comfort moving upward on steep terrain with your hands and feet engaged.

You pick the duration that fits your day: 2 hours, 3 hours or 4 hours. Each route follows the same safety system and uses the same cable-and-harness setup, so the difference is how much vertical terrain and how many sections of the cliff you cover. An experienced Alpenglow Expeditions guide stays with your group throughout, managing the technical side so you can focus on the movement and the exposure.

What’s included

  • Transportation from Olympic Valley to the start of the route.
  • an experienced Alpenglow Expeditions guide trained to AMGA standards.
  • all technical equipment including helmet, harness and continuous attachment lanyard.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (10 to 15 years). Under 10: they can't be included in the booking.

What is Via Ferrata and how is it different from regular rock climbing?

Via Ferrata is an assisted climbing activity that uses permanent steel cables, ladder rungs, steel steps and suspension bridges built into the rock to make a steep cliff face accessible without climbing skills. You stay attached to the cable the entire time with a harness and lanyard, turning terrain that would normally be impassable into a navigable route up the rock face.

Do I need climbing experience to do the Tahoe Via Ferrata?

No climbing experience is required. The permanent infrastructure and cable system handle the technical difficulty. What you need is a moderate level of physical fitness and the ability to move upward using your hands and feet on steep terrain.

What's included in the price and what do I need to bring?

The activity includes transportation from Olympic Valley to the start, an experienced AMGA-trained guide, and all technical equipment: helmet, harness and lanyard. Bring hiking shoes, a backpack, water and snacks. Public transportation options are available near the start point if you need them.

How do I choose between the 2-hour, 3-hour and 4-hour options?

All three options follow the same route and use the same safety system. The difference is how much of the cliff face you cover. The 2-hour route covers less vertical terrain, while the 3-hour and 4-hour options let you ascend higher and explore more sections of Tram Face above Olympic Valley.

What's the age requirement and can families do this together?

Children are welcome from age 10 and up. The activity is family-friendly for all ages and abilities, so parents and kids can climb the same route together with the same guide and safety system.
