The Experience

“You ever hear a whale sing?” That’s what our captain asked as we drifted off the Mala Boat Ramp in Lahaina. I was still fumbling with my paper cup (filtered water, no plastic — they’re serious about it), but then he dropped the hydrophone into the ocean and suddenly it was like this underwater concert, all low moans and distant clicks. The air smelled briny, a little sweet — maybe from the plumeria trees somewhere behind us? Anyway, I didn’t expect to feel goosebumps just from listening.

The boat itself is this bright pink thing that honestly made me smile before we even left. Our guide, Kaleo, pointed out Lana’i and Moloka’i on the horizon — he grew up here and you could tell by how he talked about the islands, almost like they were old friends. We spotted our first humpback after maybe twenty minutes; someone yelled “there!” and everyone rushed to one side (the crew kept us balanced). It wasn’t crowded at all — plenty of space to move or just lean on the rail and let the wind mess up your hair.

I tried to get a photo with one of their GoPro sticks but mostly ended up watching instead. The whales came closer than I’d thought they would. At one point a calf slapped its tail and everybody cheered — even Kaleo looked genuinely happy, which felt contagious. The sunlight bounced off the water in that way Maui does best, all silver and blue flashes. I caught myself just staring, forgetting about pictures for once.

Li from our group tried to say “humpback” in Hawaiian (koholā) and Kaleo laughed — apparently it’s trickier than it looks. There was this easy feeling among everyone onboard, like we’d lucked out getting such a small group together after everything Lahaina’s been through lately. I keep thinking about those whale songs echoing under us; it’s hard to explain but it stuck with me long after we docked.
