The experience

The boat leaves Mala Boat Ramp in the afternoon, and you'll spend two hours in waters where humpback whales breed and nurse their calves. The vessel is newly remodeled with 360-degree views and plenty of room to move: no crowding at the rail. Captains and crew have logged over 25 years watching these waters, so they know where the whales are and how to position the boat so everyone gets a clear sight line. The small group size means you're not jostling for space or competing for the guide's attention. Instead, questions get answered and moments don't get lost in a crowd.

A hydrophone on board lets you hear the whales singing and calling beneath the surface: a sound most people never get to experience. The boat is painted pink, and according to the crew, the whales respond to it. You'll also see Moloka'i, Lana'i, Kaho'olawe and Haleakala in the distance, with the West Maui mountains as a backdrop. Extendable GoPro sticks are available if you want to capture the moment, and the crew uses filtered water and paper cups to keep the impact on the marine sanctuary minimal.
