The Experience
I honestly didn’t expect to hear whales singing through the hull — it was kind of surreal. We set out from Kaanapali Beach, shoes in hand, sand still warm from the morning sun. Our guide, Kaleo, grinned as he handed out the gear and explained how to spot a tail slap versus a breach (I kept mixing them up). The raft felt snug but not cramped, and there was full shade — which I appreciated more than I thought I would after about ten minutes on the water.
The first humpback we saw was just… there. No big announcement. Someone whispered “look,” and suddenly this massive shape surfaced right beside us. You could smell the salt and something almost sweet in the air — maybe sunscreen or plumeria? Kaleo started telling us about how these whales come all the way from Alaska to have their calves here in Maui’s Au‘Au Channel. He pointed out a mother and calf pair, and for a second everything went quiet except for their breaths and some distant laughter from another boat (ours was quieter — everyone just watching).
I tried to get a photo but ended up just staring most of the time. There’s WiFi onboard if you want to post straight away, but honestly I forgot about my phone until later. At one point Kaleo let us listen through a hydrophone — that’s when you really get it, how alive this place is under the surface. I still think about that sound sometimes when it’s quiet at home.
