The Experience
“Don’t worry, you’ll get used to the wobble in the first five minutes,” our guy at the rental shop grinned, handing us our life vests. He had that sun-bleached hair and easy way of talking that just makes you trust him instantly. We checked in about half an hour before our slot—enough time to fumble with sunscreen and try not to look like total beginners. The kayaks were already waiting for us on the sand, bright colors against the greyish morning light (June gloom, they call it). I could smell salt and something faintly fishy—honestly, it made me hungry.
Once we pushed off into the La Jolla Ecological Reserve, everything got quiet except for our paddles hitting the water and some distant gulls yelling over who-knows-what. The main keyword here is freedom—no guide hovering, just us figuring out which way to go. I kept thinking I’d tip over every time a small wave hit, but after a while my arms found their rhythm. We weren’t allowed near the sea caves (they’re strict about that), but even from a distance you could see birds circling above them. Every so often a seal would pop up nearby, snorting like it was judging my technique. At one point we spotted a whole raft of sea lions lounging on rocks—one scratched its belly with a flipper and I swear it looked right at me.
I didn’t expect to feel so tiny out there, floating between sky and water with La Jolla’s cliffs behind us. Sometimes we just stopped paddling to drift and watch little silver fish flicker under the surface. There was this moment when everything went still—no boats passing by, just us bobbing quietly while sunlight finally broke through the clouds. It felt weirdly peaceful for such a busy coastline.
