The experience

La Jolla's Ecological Reserve is a protected area where you control the route and the pace. The rental includes a safety briefing that covers where you can and can't paddle, so you know the boundaries before you leave the beach. Life vest, kayak and paddle are all waiting for you at the water's edge once you've checked in: no extra gear to hunt down or assemble.

The 90-minute window is enough time to explore the reserve's coves and rocky outcrops without feeling rushed. Marine life shows up year-round: fish, seabirds and pinnipeds are common sightings, and depending on the season you might paddle past dolphins or even whales. The view back toward La Jolla's cliffs and town is part of the draw. The water gives you a perspective most visitors never get.

Note that kayak rentals don't enter the Sea Caves, and you'll need to be a comfortable swimmer to rent on your own. If you've never paddled solo before, the operator recommends their guided tours as a first step. Wetsuits are available to rent separately at check-in for $12 if the water temperature matters to you, and lockers are $6 if you need to secure your belongings.
