The Experience

The boat leaves the Seward Harbor 360 Hotel dock at 8:30 a.m., and you're on the water for 8.5 hours straight — which sounds long until you realize that's the whole point. Most Kenai Fjords cruises stick to the busy routes. This one heads into Northwestern Fjord, the part that requires a smaller vessel and a captain willing to chase whatever the day offers: humpback whales, orca, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, the birds. You travel through Resurrection Bay first, then past the Chiswell Islands where thousands of seabirds nest on the cliffs, then into Harris Bay where the mountains get steeper and the water gets quieter.

Once you're in Northwestern Fjord — and this is the part people come for — you stop in front of Northwestern Glacier, an actively-calving tidewater glacier. The captain positions the boat so you can watch the ice break and fall into the water. It happens without warning. There's also Anchor Glacier and Ojive Glacier at the end of the fjord, both surrounded by alpine glaciers clinging to the cliffs above. The route shifts day to day depending on sea conditions and where the wildlife is moving, so the captain has real flexibility to find what's there rather than stick to a fixed schedule. You get binoculars on board, narration from the captain and crew who know these waters, and a deli lunch — turkey, roast beef, or vegetarian — partway through.

The boat is small enough that you're not packed in with hundreds of people, which changes how close you can get to things and how long the captain can linger at each stop. Children under 12 aren't suitable for this cruise because of the length and the open water, so the group stays adult-focused. You'll need moderate fitness — you're on a boat for most of the day, and the weather in Alaska doesn't pause for comfort, so dress for wind and spray. The return is 5 p.m., which gives you the whole afternoon back in Seward if you need it.
