Kayak tour at Yellowstone Lake

  • Learn about Yellowstone's history and geology
  • Kayak along shoreline to West Thumb Geyser Basin
  • Explore geothermal features from kayaks
  • Return along shoreline watching wildlife
  • Arrive back at Grant Village before dark

The experience

The kayaks put in at Grant Village and head out along the shoreline toward West Thumb Geyser Basin, a primitive landscape with no boardwalks, no signs and no crowds. Many of the geothermal features (geysers, hot springs, steam vents) sit both on the land and underwater, visible only from the water itself. Your guide leads you close enough to see them clearly, then turns back the way you came, following the shore and watching for wildlife as the light fades. The paddle ends just before dark.

All necessary equipment arrives with you: kayak, paddle, personal flotation device and instruction on paddling technique. Your guide introduces you to Yellowstone's geology and the lake's history before you launch, so you understand what you're looking at. No prior kayaking experience is required, and all skill levels are welcome. You'll get wet (layered, quick-drying clothes and shoes you don't mind soaking are essential), and the weather can shift fast, so come prepared for cold and possible afternoon showers.

Choose between a single kayak (one person per boat) or a tandem kayak (two people sharing). Children under 12 must paddle tandem with an adult. Single kayaks are not available for anyone under 13. The rate structure differs by kayak type: tandem is priced per boat for two people, while single kayaks are priced per person.

Is this one for you?The tandem kayak suits families with children under 12 or anyone who prefers sharing a boat. Single kayaks work for solo paddlers and groups of adults who want their own boat. Either way, the small-group format and guide's knowledge mean you're not just paddling. You're learning why the geysers and hot springs exist and how they shape the lake.
