Kayak along Yellowstone Lake shoreline

  • Meet at Grant Village marina
  • Receive kayaking safety instructions
  • Paddle around shoreline exploring geothermal features
  • Observe wildlife while returning to marina

The experience

The paddle starts at Grant Village marina on the western edge of Yellowstone Lake, the largest lake in the country above 7,000 feet elevation. Your guide leads you around the shoreline where geothermal features line the water's edge and sit beneath the surface: sights that only open up from a kayak. You'll explore these features at a casual pace, then follow the shoreline back, watching for wildlife as you paddle. The whole trip runs three hours, and instruction on kayak control happens early so you spend the rest of the time taking in the lake rather than thinking about technique.

Small groups are the rule here, which means you get real attention from the guide and genuine access to the area without the crowds that fill other parts of the park. All equipment comes with you (kayak, paddle, personal flotation device), and no prior experience is required. Single kayaks work for adults and teens. Children 12 and under paddle in a tandem kayak with an adult, and the operator takes kids as young as five regularly. The water is cold and you will get wet, so arrive in layers and synthetic quick-drying material. A rain jacket and a change of warm clothes for after the trip ends are smart additions.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24h before the start.

What geothermal features will I see from the kayak?

Geothermal features line the shoreline and sit underwater along Yellowstone Lake. Your guide points out both the ones visible on land and the ones beneath the surface as you paddle around the west thumb of the lake. The exact features depend on water level and conditions, but the guide knows where to find them and what they are.

Do I need kayaking experience to paddle Yellowstone Lake?

No experience is required. Your guide teaches you how to safely control your kayak at the start, and the pace is casual enough that you can relax and focus on the scenery once you're comfortable with the basics.

Can my young children come kayaking on Yellowstone Lake?

Children as young as five can join. They paddle in a tandem kayak with an adult. All children 12 and under are required to use a tandem kayak for safety. When you book, you choose the tandem option and specify how many children will be paddling.

What should I wear for a three-hour paddle in Yellowstone?

Dress in layers and bring synthetic quick-drying shorts or wind pants, shoes you don't mind getting wet, and a rain or wind jacket. Yellowstone weather changes fast and can be cold, especially early morning and at night, and you will get wet while paddling. A change of warm dry clothes for after the trip is a good idea.

How many people paddle in each group?

Groups stay small to ensure safety and give everyone real access to the guide and the area. The exact group size varies, but small groups are the operator's standard practice on every trip.
