The island has a zip line, slack line, hammock swings and a 20-foot slide waiting after you paddle.

Kayak the Waccamaw River on a guided paddle through river wilderness, with a stop on a 48-acre private island where you can stretch, explore the island's activities and learn about the ecosystem from your guide. The two-hour outing includes kayak, paddle and life jacket. Children from age 6 are welcome, and you'll likely spot turtles, fish, birds and snakes along the way, with a chance to see deer or a barred owl.

The experience

Your kayak hits the water and you follow the guide down the Waccamaw River, paddling past cypress and tupelo while keeping watch for movement in the shallows. Turtles sun themselves on logs; herons stand motionless in the reeds; fish break the surface. The guide knows where to look and what to listen for: the call of a pileated woodpecker, the rustle of a squirrel in the canopy overhead. Each paddle is different because the river changes with the season and the animals move with it, so you might see baby toads and dragonflies one month and deer stepping down to drink the next.

Midway through, you pull up to the private island and beach your kayak. Everyone gets out to walk around, and the guide points out what grows here and what lives here. The island has a zip line, slack lines, hammock swings and a 20-foot slide if you want to use them, or you can just walk and listen. The guide fills in details about the island's events and what makes this stretch of the Waccamaw different from the rest: the history, the plants, the animals that live nowhere else nearby. It's not a quick stop. There's time to move around and ask questions.

The paddle back follows the same route but the light is different, the animals have moved, and you see things you missed on the way out. Two hours total gives you enough time on the water to settle into the rhythm of paddling without rushing through it. The guide handles navigation and safety. You handle the paddle. Life jackets, kayak and paddle are all included, and the guide speaks English and knows the river well enough to spot the rare sightings (a bald eagle, a river otter, an alligator), though those are uncommon.

Is this one for you?Book this kayak if you want to paddle on your own rather than watch from a boat, and you're comfortable with a moderate paddle for two hours. The island stop breaks up the time on the water and gives you a chance to walk around and ask the guide questions about what you've seen.
