The experience
The boat ride out is half the adventure. A late-model pontoon carries your party of up to six to the quiet mangrove ecosystem just offshore, where the water stays calm and the creeks wind through natural channels. Your captain (who usually brings her own dog) knows where the paddling is best and will point out the marine birds and sea life along the way. You choose kayaks, paddleboards, or a mix of both before you go. The captain teaches you what you need to know to handle whichever you pick.
Once you're on the water, you paddle at your own pace through the protected creeks. There's no rush and no crowds. This is where locals come to play. The mangroves frame the route, and the shallows stay clear enough to see what's moving below. After an hour or so of paddling, the captain brings everyone to one of the sandbars scattered across the Keys. Floating rafts are there for lounging, and your onboard cooler holds whatever drinks and snacks you brought along.
The whole outing runs about three and a half hours. Dogs are welcome aboard, and children must come with an adult. You'll need to be comfortable swimming and getting back on the boat via a ladder. The captain will help, but this isn't a passive ride. Bring a hat, long sleeves, reef-safe sunscreen and sunglasses: the sun reflects hard off the water.
