Hike above the Nāpali Coast from vantage points only the ridges reach

This private Kauai tour runs 6 to 7 hours and combines driving through Waimea Canyon with a ridge hike in Kōkeʻe State Park, ending at cliff-top views of the 17-mile Nāpali Coast. Your local guide drives you across the island's center to 4,000 feet, stops at canyon overlooks including one facing Waipo'o Falls, then leads you on foot along ridges where the views open up in ways roadside lookouts cannot reach. Lunch happens at Kōkeʻe Lodge or a picnic spot you choose.

The experience

Six to seven hours gives you time to move at your own pace: hike as much or as little as the day allows, or swap the ridge walk for more driving to overlooks if that suits you better. The tour is fully customizable, so your guide adjusts to what you want. You'll start by driving east to west across the island, passing through the agricultural towns of Hanapēpē and Waimea, where your guide explains their role in Kauai's history. As you climb toward the North Shore, the landscape shifts: vegetation thins, the air cools, and the arid leeward side opens up below you.

Once you reach Waimea Canyon, you stop at some of the best overlooks (including one with a view of the 800-foot Waipo'o Falls), before heading into Kōkeʻe State Park or Waimea Canyon State Park to begin the ridge hike. The hike can be muddy, but the payoff is views of the canyon's rainbow-colored walls and the dramatic middle sections of the Nāpali Coast from vantage points accessible only on foot. At 4,000 feet above the ocean, the perspective is unlike what you get from any road. Between hikes or overlooks, you'll eat lunch at the charmingly rustic Kōkeʻe Lodge, which sits right in the hiking area, or at a picnic spot if you've brought your own food.

Your guide is a local who knows these ridges and canyons from exploring them in their own time, not just from leading tours. They bring trekking poles, gloves, ponchos and shoe traction devices if the terrain needs them, and they carry a small cooler for food and drink storage in the vehicle. The tour includes private transportation, a fresh local snack or fruit, and the flexibility to shape the day around what you want to see and how much you want to walk.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the hike actually like on the Nāpali cliff-top ridges?

The ridge hike follows trails in Kōkeʻe State Park or Waimea Canyon State Park at 4,000 feet above the ocean. The terrain can be muddy, but the reward is sweeping views of the Nāpali Coast and Waimea Canyon from vantage points you cannot reach by car. Your guide provides trekking poles, gloves and shoe traction devices if conditions call for them.

Can I do this tour if I don't want to hike the whole time?

Yes. The tour is fully customizable, so you can hike as much or as little as you want in the 6 to 7 hours you have. If you'd prefer to spend more time driving to spectacular overlooks instead, your guide can arrange that.

What does lunch include and where do we eat?

You'll eat lunch at Kōkeʻe Lodge, which sits in the hiking area between hikes and overlooks, or at a picnic spot if you've packed your own food. The tour includes a fresh local snack or fruit surprise, and your guide carries a small cooler in the vehicle for storing food and drinks.

Is there a parking or entrance fee I need to know about?

The tour price does not include the state park visitor entrance and parking fee, which varies depending on your group size. You can pay by credit card at self-service kiosks in the state park parking lots.

What's included in the private transportation?

Private transportation covers the drive across the island to Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Park, plus the pickup and drop-off. Your guide drives you through the agricultural towns and along the canyon rim to reach the trailheads where the ridge hike begins.
