The Experience

I didn’t expect to hear so many birds before we even started walking. We met our guide just outside Lihue, right where the Hule’ia watershed opens up below the Ha’upu mountains. It was humid but not too hot—just that sticky feeling you get on Kauai sometimes. Our group was small, which felt good. The trail itself was only about a quarter mile each way, but it’s muddy and uneven (my sneakers are still drying out). The guide handed me a hiking stick, which I pretended I didn’t need at first—turns out I did.

We stopped at Bamboo Falls first. It’s not huge—maybe 30 feet?—but there’s something about the way the water catches the light through all that green. I tried to take a photo but my lens fogged up from the mist. Our guide told us some stories about the land and pointed out native plants (I forgot half their names already). Then we kept going, slipping around a bit on these slick rocks, until we could hear Papakolea Falls before we saw it. That sound—the kind that fills your chest—made me stop talking for once.

I’m not usually one for cold water, but you kind of have to swim here. The pool under Papakolea is deeper than it looks, and swimming behind the falls is wild—the water hits your back hard and everything goes white for a second. My friend tried to shout something over the noise but all I caught was her laugh echoing off the rocks. I still think about how alive my skin felt after climbing out, goosebumps and all.
