The experience

Waimea Canyon dominates the day. You start with a stop at a local bakery near your pickup location, then head to the Kauai Coffee Company (the largest coffee plantation in the US), where you sample about five varieties free and walk through part of the orchard at your own pace to see how beans move from seed to cup. From there the tour climbs toward the canyon, passing through Waimea town, where the guide shares stories of Captain James Cook's arrival and death, and making an optional stop at Aunty Lilikoi's, a small local business known for award-winning jams and passion fruit products.

The canyon itself unfolds in stages as you ascend to about 3,800 feet. You stop at various lookouts for photographs and to take in the scale of what geologists call the mini Grand Canyon of the Pacific. The route then reaches Kalalau Lookout, the largest valley on the Na Pali coast, though weather up in the mountains means the views are never guaranteed. The narrow roads here limit groups to six people, so you travel in a Honda Odyssey minivan instead of a larger vehicle. After the lookout, you walk Waimea Pier to see the Forbidden Island of Niihau and the black sand of Waimea Bay, where the first Western explorers landed.

Hanapepe comes next: a historic, charming town where you can shop for locally made art and souvenirs, buy a fruit popsicle, browse the Talk Story Bookstore for rare books, and cross the swinging bridge built in 1912. The day ends at Kokeʻe Lodge in Kokeʻe State Park, where you can order lunch (not included, 10 percent discount applies) and then explore the museum of natural and cultural history, walk through grassy fields ringed by Sugi and Redwood pines, or take a short easy nature walk to learn about native plants.
