The Experience

“Hey y’all, want a photo here?” That’s how our guide, Marcus, broke the ice as we rolled up to this wild splash of color on Main Street. I was still fumbling with my phone when he offered to take it for us—honestly, I’m glad he did because my selfies always cut off someone’s head. The mural was bigger than I expected, and there was this faint smell of spray paint in the air—fresh, but not harsh. A couple walked by and gave us a thumbs up. Felt like everyone downtown was in on the mural thing.

We zipped through Houston’s downtown in this open golf cart (wind in your hair, but not too much), stopping every few blocks. Marcus pointed out little details—like how some artists sneak their initials into the corner or use certain colors for neighborhoods. At Market Square Park, we paused while he told us about the old bars nearby and where locals actually hang out after work. There was music drifting from somewhere—a saxophone? Not sure if that was planned or just Houston being Houston.
