The experience
The tour starts at Market Square Park, where Houston's oldest buildings stand and the city's most-photographed mural waits for your camera. From there, the guide walks you through nearly two miles of the Historic District, stopping at the Gulf Building (a 37-story Art Deco tower completed in 1929 with a glowing stepped crown that still lights the skyline at night), and then Houston City Hall, a limestone landmark from 1939 with bold geometric designs that define the city's golden age of architecture.
The Theater District comes next, home to the Alley Theater and Jones Hall, where you'll see how Houston's performing arts venues shaped the city's cultural identity. Then you board Houston's modern tramline for free and travel to Tranquility Park, where the guide explains the city's connection to NASA and the space program. The Niels Esperson Building, an Italian Renaissance-style skyscraper from 1927, and a historic courthouse round out the stops: each one a piece of how Houston built itself from a frontier town into a modern metropolis.
The whole route covers about two miles on foot. A local guide leads the group and talks through the history and architecture as you move between stops. Children from age 5 are welcome, and infants can ride in a stroller or sit on an adult's lap.
