The experience
You start at Black Diamond Resort Co after a short safety briefing, then climb into your own Polaris Ranger: an open-air vehicle with seat belts, windshield and cover, built for rough terrain. Your guide drives while you navigate the backcountry together, working as a team to find hidden clues scattered across old mining paths, the Dry Creek River Bed, and the tundra around Black Diamond Peak. The search takes you through genuine backcountry, not a marked loop: you stop when something catches your eye, walk up the side of the peak for views of the Healy Valley, or follow a trail that opens onto new ground.
As you hunt, your guide talks through the local history, the plants and animals you pass, and the mining heritage of the area. The clues lead you toward a rustic pavilion deep in the woods where the real reward waits: a full meal cooked camp-style. Morning tours serve a lumberjack breakfast with fresh-baked biscuits and gravy, reindeer sausage and flapjacks. Afternoon and evening departures bring ribs, steak, chicken and fresh-caught Alaska salmon. Coffee, tea, juice and hot chocolate come with every tour. Adult beverages are available. After you eat, your guide drives you back to your Healy hotel.
The tour runs rain or shine, so dress for the weather. You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness to climb in and out of the vehicle and walk the tundra, but no off-road or treasure-hunting experience is required. Children ride along with an adult, and infant car seats are available if you request one when you book. If you're driving yourself to the resort, arrive 15 minutes after your listed booking time. If you need pickup, the operator will collect you from your hotel at the booking time.

Is this one for you?You ride in the vehicle while your guide drives, so this suits families with children and anyone who wants the backcountry experience without operating an ATV themselves. If you prefer to drive your own off-road machine, look for a self-guided option instead. The fixed 3-hour schedule and included meal mean the day is planned and fed without you arranging either one.

Yes. Ticket types: Child (under 16).
What exactly is a Polaris Ranger and how does it handle backcountry terrain?
A Polaris Ranger is a small open-air vehicle similar to a Jeep but with ATV-style capability, outfitted with seat belts, a windshield and a cover for weather protection. It's built to navigate rough mining trails, river beds and tundra without a marked road.
What kind of meal do you get at the end of the treasure hunt?
Morning tours include a lumberjack breakfast with fresh-baked biscuits and gravy, reindeer sausage and flapjacks. Afternoon and evening tours feature ribs, steak, chicken and fresh-caught Alaska salmon, plus coffee, tea, juice and hot chocolate. Vegetarian options are available if you request them when booking.
Do you need experience with off-road vehicles or treasure hunting to join?
No experience is necessary. Your professional guide handles the driving while you work together to find clues and navigate the backcountry. You'll need a moderate level of fitness to climb in and out of the vehicle and walk on tundra, but the activity itself is designed for families.
Is hotel pickup included in the price, or do you drive yourself?
Round-trip transport from your Healy hotel is included when you select that option at checkout. If you drive yourself to Black Diamond Resort Co on Otto Lake Road, arrive 15 minutes after your listed booking time. The operator will confirm your preference when you book.
What is the Gates of the Arctic National Park and how does it relate to this tour?
Gates of the Arctic National Park is the vast wilderness area surrounding Healy. While the treasure hunt itself takes place on backcountry trails and private land around Black Diamond Peak, you're traveling through the same remote landscape and learning about the region's natural and mining history from your guide.
