The Experience
You start at a private dock on the Hanalei River, slip into a kayak, and paddle downstream while your guide shares the river's history and gets you comfortable with the paddle before heading into the bay. The majority of the time is spent in Hanalei Bay itself, where you'll spot Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) before the group lands kayaks on a hidden beach. There you get fitted for snorkel gear—bring your own full set or use what's provided, though full-face masks aren't permitted—and spend 45 minutes in the water. Your guide points out what to look for on the reef and explains modern reef ecology as you move through the marine life.
After snorkeling, the group comes back to the beach for Hawaiian snacks and drinks, time to sit and talk story with your guide, and a chance to ask questions about the island. The whole experience runs four hours, with a 2pm check-in at the dock. Snorkel gear, water-resistant dry bags, water and juice are all included; you're welcome to bring your own snorkel equipment as long as it's a traditional two-piece mask and snorkel, not a full-face mask.
