Learn wildlife tracking and long-lens technique while photographing Yellowstone's bison, foxes and sunrise light

A half-day private wildlife photography class in Yellowstone where you photograph live animals and landscapes while learning tracking techniques, telephoto composition, and ethical wildlife practices from a guide. Private transportation to prime viewing locations is included. You'll need a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a 400mm telephoto lens and basic camera knowledge. A one-on-one post-processing session via Discord follows the field work.

The experience

Five hours in the field with a private guide who teaches you to read animal movement and anticipate the shot. You'll work with your own telephoto lens, 400mm preferred, learning how to frame wildlife portraits, balance light in your compositions, and photograph animals without disturbance. The guide handles transportation to the locations where wildlife congregates, so you spend your time shooting instead of searching.

The instruction covers four skill areas: locating animals and predicting where they'll move next; using a long lens to isolate subjects and compress distance; framing and lighting for impact; and the ethical boundaries that keep you and the animals safe. You bring a camera with manual controls and a working knowledge of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. The guide provides step-by-step demonstrations in the field, adjusting to what you're seeing that morning: frost on a bison, a fox crossing snow, the angle of sunrise on the peaks.

After the field session ends, you get a one-on-one post-processing consultation via Discord where the guide walks through your images, showing how to refine exposure, color and contrast in the shots you took. The National Park entrance fee is separate. Bring your own camera and a valid driver's license if you want to drive yourself to the meeting point instead of using the included pickup.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What camera equipment do I need to bring?

A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a telephoto lens: 400mm is preferred for wildlife isolation. You'll also need a basic grasp of manual settings: aperture, shutter speed and ISO. The guide provides instruction on how to use these settings for different light and animal behavior, but you should be comfortable adjusting them yourself before the session starts.

How does the private guide tailor the morning to what we see?

The guide leads you to locations where wildlife typically gathers and teaches you to read animal behavior: how to predict movement and position yourself for the best angle. If a bison herd is active, you'll focus there. If foxes are moving through snow, you'll follow that light and subject instead. The instruction adapts to what's actually happening that morning rather than following a fixed script.

What happens after the five hours in the field?

You receive a one-on-one post-processing session via Discord where the guide reviews the images you captured and shows you how to refine exposure, color grading and contrast. This happens after the field work concludes, so you can see how to develop the shots you took.

Is the National Park entrance fee included?

No, the entrance fee to Yellowstone is separate and not included in the tour price. Private transportation to the viewing locations within the park is included, as is the guide's instruction and the post-processing session.

What if I don't have a telephoto lens yet?

You'll need to bring your own camera with a telephoto lens. The guide does not provide equipment. If you don't own a 400mm lens, you may want to rent one before the session so you can practice the settings and handling beforehand.
