The experience
The hike starts at Firehole River with hot coffee or tea and a light snack, then a safety briefing before the group heads out. The first stop is the Grand Prismatic Spring overlook: the vantage point that shows Yellowstone's largest hot spring in full, with the colored waters and mountain backdrop visible all at once. This is the reason to start early: the parking area fills fast, and the overlook itself gets crowded by mid-morning.
From there, the route drops into the pines of the 1988 burn zone and climbs to Fairy Falls, a 200-foot waterfall that drops straight over the cliff edge. The trail passes through wildflower patches and open forest where wildlife spotting is common. A snack break sits you down to listen to the water while the guide points out the thermal features around you.
The last leg heads to Imperial Geyser, a smaller and quieter thermal area where eruptions happen with fewer people watching. Lunch (a sandwich, apple, nuts and snacks, with vegan and gluten-free options available) happens on the trail here, surrounded by the colorful mineral deposits and steam. The whole tour runs about six hours. Bear spray, binoculars and trekking poles are provided. Bring two liters of water per person and a rain jacket or fleece layer for the weather shifts that happen fast at elevation.
