The Experience

"You ever seen rocks this red?" That’s what our driver, Mike, asked as we wound out of Sedona before sunrise—Oak Creek Canyon still half-shadowed, the air sharp enough to wake me up better than coffee. The van was quiet except for the crunch of gravel when we stopped for photos. I kept thinking I should’ve brought gloves, but then the sun hit the cliffs and everything went gold for a minute. You could smell pine and something dusty in the air—hard to describe unless you’ve been there.

By the time we reached Grand Canyon South Rim, I’d already lost count of how many times our guide pointed out something I’d have missed—a coyote darting through brush, layers in the rock older than dinosaurs (I think he said 1.8 billion years? My brain can’t hold numbers like that). The first view just sort of hits you sideways; it’s so wide you almost feel dizzy. A woman behind the counter told me about her grandmother weaving by hand; Li laughed when I tried to say “Yá’át’ééh” (hello in Navajo)—probably butchered it. The drive home felt slower somehow, everyone quieter after all that open space. I still think about that view sometimes when I'm stuck in traffic or scrolling my phone—just this huge silence out there.
