The experience
Gold Creek sits in a secluded spot near a waterfall, accessible only to groups with the tour's special permit. A prospector guide walks you through the history first: Juneau itself was founded by Joe Juneau and Richard Harris after they struck gold here in 1880, and the Alaska-Juneau Mining Company became the largest operation of its kind in the world at peak production. You'll see the remnants of the original mining buildings still standing in the basin.
Then you pan for gold yourself, working the creek waters or a waist-high demonstration trough with tips from your guide. People of all ages and mobility levels can learn the technique, and you're guaranteed to find gold: whatever you pull from the pan is yours to keep. The prospector also gives you a souvenir Orelove Brothers Gold Claim Certificate to take home.
After the panning, a 20-minute shuttle takes you to Gold Creek Salmon Bake, set in a lush rainforest under heated, translucent domes. The all-you-can-eat spread centers on wild Alaskan salmon grilled over alder wood fire, with Cheechako Chicken as an alternative, plus Alaskan sides and blueberry cake for dessert. Live music plays while you eat, and you can take a short walk along a natural salmon-spawning creek to Salmon Creek Falls and the Wagner Mine entrance, where you can pan for gold again, roast marshmallows over a campfire, and pose at an interactive gold rush mural. Shuttle buses run regularly, so you can linger as long as you like.
