The Experience

The dogs are already harnessed and waiting when you arrive at the Mt. Roberts Tram base in downtown Juneau. Your driver meets you where the cable lines emerge from the building, then drives you deep into the Tongass National Rainforest on Douglas Island — about 30 minutes through old-growth spruce and hemlock. The air gets quieter the farther in you go. When you pull up to the musher's camp, you hear them before you see them: sixteen Alaskan Huskies, most of them Iditarod veterans, ready to run.

You ride behind the musher on an actual sled pulled by the full team. These aren't show dogs or pets — they're working athletes kept sharp during the summer season when the Iditarod is months away. The musher explains what it takes from both dog and handler to survive a thousand-mile race across Alaska: the conditioning, the diet, the bond that has to exist before you ever leave the starting line. The run itself is short but real. You feel the power of the team the moment they accelerate, and the musher handles the brake and the commands while you're on the runners.

After the ride, the energy shifts. You spend time with the puppies — Alaskan Husky pups that will eventually train into the same role as the veterans you just rode behind. They're still months or years away from harness work, so they're just puppies: climbing on you, chewing your gloves, doing what puppies do. It's the part that catches most people off guard. You go from the intensity of the sled run to sitting on the ground with animals that don't yet know what they're built for.
