The experience

The hike begins at the Exit Glacier Visitor Center, where your guide meets you and goes over bear safety before you start. Trekking poles are available if you want them. The trail itself is undeveloped (you're walking on natural terrain, not a maintained path), and it follows the outflow plain as it climbs toward an elevated point that overlooks both the glacier's toe and its face. The walk covers roughly 2 miles and takes about 2.5 hours round-trip, returning the same way you came.

At the overlook, your guide spends time explaining the geology, flora and fauna of the area. Moose, mountain goats, and smaller animals are common sightings. Black bears appear at times. The guide's insight into how the landscape formed and what you're looking at transforms what might otherwise be a simple walk into an understanding of how glaciers shape the terrain around them.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't arrange your own transport. The hike operates in all weather, so bring layers and gear suited to the conditions. A moderate level of fitness and some mobility are needed for the undeveloped terrain, and children must be at least 10 years old and accompanied by an adult.

What’s included

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off.
  • professional guide leading the hike and explaining the geology, flora and fauna.
  • trekking poles available on request.
  • bear safety briefing.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (10 to 15 years). Under 10: they can't be included in the booking.

What does the trail itself look like on an Exit Glacier hike?

The trail is undeveloped, meaning you walk on natural terrain rather than a groomed path. It follows the outflow plain, the area where glacial meltwater flows, and climbs to an elevated overlook. You're not walking on the glacier itself or on ice. The hike stays on solid ground the whole way.

Will I see the glacier up close on this hike?

You reach an overlook where you can see the glacier face and toe from an elevated vantage point. The hike does not travel on ice or take you onto the glacier itself, so this is a viewing hike rather than an ice-walking experience.

How long does the Exit Glacier nature hike take?

The hike takes about 2.5 hours total, including the walk up to the overlook and back down the same trail, plus time with your guide at the overlook learning about the geology and wildlife.

What animals might I see on the trail?

Moose, mountain goats, and smaller animals are common sightings. Black bears appear at times, which is why your guide covers bear safety before you start walking.

Is hotel pickup included in the price?

Yes, hotel pickup and drop-off are included. Your guide meets you at your hotel and returns you there after the hike.
