  • Walk along a beautiful river
  • See several small cascades
  • Explore remains of old town

The experience

What makes this walk different is the river itself. You're not climbing ridge lines or chasing views. You're following water through a quiet part of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, moving at a pace that lets you notice things. The guide interprets the plants, wildlife, stream life and human history as you go, so the forest becomes readable instead of just scenery. The path takes you past several small cascades and deep pools, through wildflower patches, and to the remains of a town that once stood in the valley before the park was established.

The route covers 4.2 miles over 3.5 hours with only 300 feet of elevation change, which means you're walking on mostly level ground beside the water rather than climbing. You meet at Sugarlands Visitors Center and move through a section of the park designed to be approachable: no scrambling, no exposure, no crowds. The guide brings peanut-based snacks and water is your responsibility, so pack plenty before you start.

The tour runs in all weather, so rain doesn't cancel it. Dress for the conditions you expect. A minimum of two people is required to operate the tour, and children must stay with an adult throughout. The guide speaks English and can answer questions about what you're seeing as you walk.

What’s included
