Step-by-step itinerary

Guided walk in Great Smoky Mountains

  • Meet at Greenbrier Parking Area
  • Walk along old roadbed through forest
  • See cascading mountain stream and wildflowers
  • Visit historic cabins and old rock walls
  • Explore springhouse and family traces
  • Enjoy nature sounds and mountain plants
  • Listen to guide's stories and history

The experience

The walk starts at Greenbrier Parking Area, one of the quieter entrances to the national park. From there, you follow an old roadbed through forest, moving water, and the physical traces of mountain life: rock walls built by hand, a springhouse, and cabins that still stand. The guide interprets what you're seeing as you walk, connecting the landscape to the people who shaped it. This is not a strenuous hike. The 347 feet of elevation change happens gradually over the 2.5 miles, and the pace stays relaxed throughout.

The stream itself is the centerpiece. You walk alongside moving water for much of the route, and the guide uses it as a way into the history: how families settled near water, how the land changed, what remains. Wildflowers appear seasonally along the trail. The forest canopy and the sound of the creek create the setting for the stories, rather than competing with them. The whole experience takes about 3 hours from start to finish.

Trail snacks (trail mix, peanut butter crackers, or fruit snacks) are provided partway through. The tour operates rain or shine, and it's designed for all fitness levels, which means families with young children, seniors, and first-time hikers all find their footing here. Because Greenbrier is less crowded than other park entrances, you get the Smokies without the crowds.

What’s included
