The experience

You start by riding Angels Flight, the 1901 train featured in La La Land and Bosch. The ticket is included. From there, the walk moves through Downtown's financial district, where Victorian Bunker Hill once stood before the modern skyscrapers rose. You'll see how LA transformed from a town of 44 people into a city of millions, and you'll stand in front of the buildings that shaped that story: the Bradbury Building from 1893, with its cast-iron railings and skylights; the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Frank Gehry's masterpiece of stainless steel curves; and the two free art museums on Bunker Hill. The Museum of Contemporary Art and The Broad, which holds one of the country's best Pop Art collections.

The route takes you down Broadway, where the largest collection of historic movie palaces still standing in the United States lines the street: grand theatres that hosted premieres for Charlie Chaplin and other Hollywood legends. You'll walk Spring Street, which was once called "The Wall Street of the West," and see how the architecture shifts from Beaux Arts to Art Deco as you move down the block. Inside The Last Bookstore, you explore the original bank building and its vault. Grand Central Market, operating for over 100 years, rounds out the food and commerce side of Downtown's story.

The tour ends in Little Tokyo, where you'll learn about the Japanese communities that shaped California and LA. You stop at a family business that has run since 1903 (through two world wars, the Great Depression, and 120 years of ups and downs), and sample their mochi.
