The experience

The day starts at one of two meeting points in Sturgeon Bay, or with pickup service if you're staying south of Egg Harbor. You'll begin at the working Coast Guard Station where the Sturgeon Bay Canal meets Lake Michigan, walk the 1000-foot pier to the Pierhead Lighthouse with its deep red color, then move into the county's natural attractions: the sand dunes and rocky banks of Whitefish Dunes State Park, and Cave Point's dramatic rock formations carved from the Niagara Escarpment. The van holds ten people in individual leather captain's chairs with armrests and USB chargers, so there's room to move and space to breathe between stops.

The route sweeps north and west through Door County's villages and historic sites. You'll walk the boardwalk connecting Bailey's Harbor Range Lights and see the bird cage lighthouse; view the Washington Island Ferry and three lighthouses from Northport Pier (where the famous curvy road leads in); stop at the cherry orchards and shop if it's open; climb the stepped path to an overlook perched on a bluff overlooking Green Bay; drive through Sister Bay and Ephraim with their Scandinavian heritage and harbor views; see the Potawatomi memorial; and explore Peninsula State Park's tree-canopied roads, with the Eagle Tower as the main stop. Lunch is a box meal included in the tour, eaten somewhere along the route.

The southern leg covers Fish Creek (voted one of America's 15 prettiest small towns by Forbes), where you'll see Founder's Square, the harbor, and Millionaire's Row. Sturgeon Bay itself closes the loop: you'll see the Fincantieri shipbuilding company and any ships in dock, cross both draw bridges downtown, walk Third Street's shops and galleries, and view the new 60-foot Eagle Harbor Tower with its ADA-accessible ramp.
