The Experience

I’ll be honest — I didn’t expect to feel nervous just looking up at Pikes Peak from Colorado Springs. It’s so much bigger in person than any photo shows. Our driver, Dave, had this calm way of talking about the mountain like it was an old friend (“she’s moody when the clouds roll in,” he said). The leather seats were comfier than my own car, and I kept fidgeting with the window because I couldn’t decide if I wanted more breeze or less. The air already felt thinner as we left Manitou Springs behind — that town is quirky by the way, full of murals and people refilling bottles at those mineral water fountains. Tasted a bit metallic but not bad.

The drive up the Pikes Peak Highway was slow enough for me to actually see things — marmots darting between rocks, wildflowers poking through gravel. Dave pointed out a spot where some guy tried to race up on a bicycle (I can’t imagine). We stopped for photos and I almost dropped my phone because my hands were weirdly shaky from the altitude. The views kept changing — one minute you’re staring at pine trees, next it’s just sky and stone. There was this moment near the top where everything went quiet except for wind rattling through the Jeep’s roof opening. I still think about that silence.

At the summit (14,115 feet, which sounds made up until you try to walk fast), there’s a visitor center where everyone crowds around for donuts — apparently they only taste right at high altitude? I bought one mostly out of curiosity. It was sweet but honestly I was too busy gawking at the horizon to care much about food. You can see all the way to distant ridges — Mount Evans, Longs Peak, even Sangre de Cristo if you squint past the haze. We took goofy photos by the sign; Dave offered to snap them and told us stories about storms rolling in faster than you’d think.
