Step-by-step itinerary
Easy nature walk in Chugach Park
- Travel to Chugach State Park
- Walk through hemlock forests
- Observe wildflowers and fungi
- Learn about boreal forest flora
- Spot wildlife like moose and bears
- Return to Anchorage
The experience
The walk starts in hemlock forests scarred by winds off the Turnagain Arm, where snowshoe hares live and rare lynx hunt. Your guide points out the layered forest: giant spruce, paper birch, and aspens overhead, alders and willows below, and lichens, fungi, berries, and mosses at ground level. In June, wild geraniums, bluebells, and forget-me-nots bloom. By late summer, blueberries ripen and colors shift as the season turns. The flora tells the story of how the ecosystem works.
The route moves through Glen Alps, one of Chugach State Park's most photographed alpine valleys. Moose and bears birth their young in spring and mate in fall, traveling through the mountains in search of food, which means real opportunity to see them. The guide teaches you to read the landscape for signs of wildlife and explains how the animals and plants depend on each other. Trekking poles are provided to help on the steeper, hillier sections of trail.
Transportation is included in the 3-hour total, so you spend roughly an hour traveling from Anchorage and 2 hours walking. A granola bar and water sustain you through the hike. The walk covers about 2 miles of uneven rolling terrain. Some parts are steep. You'll need to be able to walk that distance over 2 hours, though the pace is set for learning and observation, not speed.
