The Experience

I’d always pictured glaciers as distant, silent things — but standing at the edge of Matanuska Glacier after our drive from Anchorage, I felt this weird mix of excitement and nerves. The wind was sharp enough to sting my cheeks, but honestly? It smelled so clean it almost made my lungs ache. Our guide, Sarah, handed out these chunky Yaktrax for our boots and laughed when I tried to zip up the jacket over my sweater — “You’ll want that extra layer in about ten minutes,” she said. She was right.

The first steps onto the glacier were kind of awkward. There’s this soft crunch underfoot that’s nothing like snow back home — more like walking on hard-packed sugar that squeaks if you twist your heel. Sarah pointed out blue veins running through the ice and explained how they form (I only half-remember the science bit, but it sounded wild). We stopped a lot, partly because we couldn’t stop staring at these jagged towers of ice that looked almost fake in the sun. At one point she showed us a narrow crevasse and tossed a pebble in; we never heard it hit bottom. That stuck with me.

Lunch wasn’t fancy — just snacks and bottled water huddled around our backpacks — but I swear everything tasted better out there. A couple from Palmer joined us, and we traded stories about slipping on the ice (nobody fell, but there were close calls). The quiet out there is different; you can hear your own breath echoing off the glacier walls if you stop talking for a second. I didn’t expect to feel so small or so awake at the same time.

On the way back to Anchorage, everyone got quiet for a while — maybe tired or just letting it all settle in. I kept thinking about that first step onto the glacier and how real it suddenly felt, not just something you see in pictures.
